It’s been a busy couple of months and it’s time to catch you guys up on what’s going on again. I went on my first club-sponsored trip, the cruise to Mexico, with members of the Stockyards and Fort Worth clubs. We had THE BEST time. And other than the fact that I tried to kill our chapter president before we left Fort Worth, everything went smooth.
Well, I didn’t REALLY try to kill him. Did I ever tell you I am a little accident prone? It happened like this. I’d been excited for months, packed for weeks, and useless for days by the time the day to drive down to Galveston arrived. As luck would have it, it was pouring down rain and I was late, but I made it to pick up John and Cheryl. We packed everything up and jumped in the car. John and I both noticed we hadn’t closed the back hatch and both jumped out to do it. When I pulled the hatch down, the corner hit him
squarely in the top of the head and he hit the floor. Suddenly there’s blood everywhere, John’s down, I’m screaming at Cheryl for a rag and it looks like time for a run to the emergency room. But John stopped the bleeding, took an aspirin, jumped back in the car and headed for Galveston with a headache the size of Texas.
The best part about the cruise was getting to know people from the other Chapters. The cruisers consisted of Linda and Charlie Williams who brought two sisters and a brother in-law, Mary Dike and Bill Klappholz, Patty Graves and her son Steve, Robin Pettis who brought her Mom and a friend, and John and Cheryl Lester and me. We ate and played mostly as a group. The Smuggler’s Lounge was oldies Country music and the duo in there tried their best to please us. Bill and Mary found an Asian band with a singer who could do a better Tom Jones imitation than Tom Jones – you just had to close your eyes.
A bunch of us went to the Calica Beach Break. We Drank, snorkeled, sunned and shopped. I promised I would not mention the Speedo lady or the fact that we have pictures of John and Steve that can’t be put on the website. But if you ask Robin, Cheryl, or me, I’m sure we’ll be glad to share.
Mary and Bill and Linda and Charlie can tell you about the pyramids and the excursion with the dolphins. I would love to fly through the water like Mary and Bill did. Robin and Steve closed down Senior Frog’s in Playa-del-Carmen. Ask Cheryl to show you her new "rock" that John bought her in Cozumel for their Anniversary. And then there’s the couple that I ran into on the Libido – I mean Lido deck… We have so many stories we’d love to share so just ask us.
The weekend after we got back was the all-member’s meeting/Halloween Dance. A BIG THANK YOU goes to Al Green and Frances Jordan, and everyone that helped them, for all of the work they did to get it ready and rocking. I understand that it was the biggest turnout we’ve had yet. The dance was a success, the food was great, and the meeting went well, with more people volunteering to be part of the E-Board than expected. We had costumes from a big ugly troll to a lady with a beard - ???. Anyway, The whole night was fun.
Our home club, The Horseman Club, is having a Quick-Draw Shuffle Contest every Friday night. So far, after 2 nights, it seems to be a success. Everyone is joining in, from running the program, to judging, to joining the competition. It’s a lot of fun and whether you win or not, you meet new dance partners and have a lot of fun. The idea is to draw more people on Friday night and it seems to be working. Your name goes on a list and then numbers are drawn to match the men with the women, so you don’t have any idea who you are dancing with. I danced both nights and since I didn’t throw up or pass out, I consider it a success! There’s a small cash prize, but the biggest prize is the fun and camaraderie. It starts at 8:30pm and goes till it’s done – around 9:30 or 10:00. Come join us.
The Christmas party is coming up soon and I can’t wait to see you all there. We have fun every week, but it’s even better when the entire club gets together!
Happy Thanksgiving.
